The ultrasonic tester V.A.G 1842 is used to convert ultrasonic signals, which occur from leaks or mechanical defects, to an audible range for the human ear. The measured values are also displayed. The following faults can be detected quickly using this system:

- Unmetered air in carburettor
- Defective injectors and valves
- Localisation of spark jumping
- Localisation of mechanical defects
